Freedom of Belief and Religion

The Constitution and legislation of Georgia enshrines guarantees for protection of the freedom of conscience. However, grievous violations of minor religious groups (Jehovah's Witnesses, Baptists, Fifties and other non-traditional religious adherents operating in the country) still occur. There are frequent cases of their persecution, intimidation, disruption, threatening. While it is true that this is not committed by neither state authorities nor the representatives of the Georgian Patriarchy, but there is no adequate reaction on the part of the officialdom in response to the actions of the aggressively inclined groups acting in the name of Orthodoxy. The aforementioned induces allegation that the disruptions of the religious minorities and other actions directed towards limitation of their rights on the part of the extremists religious groups fighting for strengthening of Orthodoxy are effected by the state authorities consent or with their tacit solicitation. According to various sources some ten concrete facts of infringement of believers' rights are stated in Georgia in 2001.
