Countries of the South Caucasus are the members of the UN and the OSCE, they have joined to many international conventions and pacts and have expressed their strive to democratic development. They acknowledge the importance of unalienable human rights and basic freedoms. All three countries of the Transcaucasia have created democratic constitutions in a short period of time, the constitutions as well as set other legislative acts do comply with international standards. This is one of the reasons why Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan have become the members of the Council of Europe. Despite all the above-mentioned we all understand that the Transcaucasian countries are far from establishing lawful states and dedication of our governments and societies is not enough to achieve European norms and principles. That is why, frequently we end up deceiving not only others but also ourselves.
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia all have different conditions for development, their methods and temper of democratization are also different as well as the levels of their success, but at the same time the countries share similar trends and problems.
Freedom of speech and self-expression, freedom of information, independence of judiciary and humanness of penitential system, free and fair elections, level of NGO and Media independence, respect to the Human rights and equality to the law despite nationality, religion, gender, social status -- these are some of the aspects that interest us from political and civil rights viewpoint.
